’Very few acts nowadays can genuinely be classed as ’unique’. Not only are Mike Dawes & Amy Turk the only acoustic guitar and concert harp duo in the world, both Mike & Amy utilize unorthodox performance techniques such as 2 handed tapping and percussive playing to create an extra dimension to the textural tonality that surrounds their performance. Quite simply, Mike Dawes & Amy Turk are guitar and harp like you’ve never heard before.

Formed and currently residing in the South of England, this amazingly creative act produce a pallet of intricately delicate sounds that have been stunning audiences from around the world since their formation.

Their music often defies description as comparison is inevitably a challenge. They have been described as ’Techno-Classical’, ’Post-Folk’ and their personal favorite ’The love-child of Claude Debussy and Eric Roche’.

"The music we write together is hard to describe, at points it’s hypnotic, at other times it makes you want to dance. We like to challenge ourselves. Usually when we write we have no idea how we’re going to play it until we try and learn it. That’s the fun part!"

Mike Dawes

"We’re influenced by loads really, we definitely enjoy film music and i think that comes across."

Mike began his musical adventure at 4 when his parents played him ’The Blues Brothers’ on VHS. In his early childhood he dabbled on various early electronic instruments before picking up his first electric guitar at 12.

Instantly taking to the instrument he began performing that year and in 2003, just over a year of self tuition, reached the semi final of Jimmy Page’s Riffathon guitar competition. Whilst excelling at music/music technology in both lower and higher education, he only picked up his first acoustic steel string in December 2007, already half a year into his solo guitar career which saw performances with The Martin Harley Band and Byron Johnston among others.

Unfortunately in April 2008 Mike was diagnosed with Tendonitis in both arms and hands. He could no longer play guitar, barely cut up food and was indefinitely out of action(even learning to type with his toes!) He met Amy on the first day of University, a music course he could not see finishing due to his then current inability to play. The motivation he gained from Amy was a key factor in overcoming Tendonitis, the months following saw Mike & Amy work tirelessly to form a formidable repertoire to outlet their bursting creativity. The response has been phenomenal as they’ve travelled county to county performing their work.

"He can make the guitar talk! with no effort" - Jamie Bell

Amy first picked up the Harp at the age of 7, and has been performing ever since. The following thirteen years would see her travel the country performing at venues including The Barbican, The Royal Festival Hall and The Royal Albert Hall where one of her penned arrangements was premiered to an audience of 6000. Amy has held the title of ’Woking Young Musician of the Year’ twice, with two second place awards and one third place, all achieved in consecutive years.

Amy has been awarded numerous first prize titles and other special awards at music festivals in and around the south of England. Achieving distinction in 100% of undertaken music exams (including ABRSM Grades 1-8) Amy is nothing short of truly dedicated to her craft.

During higher education Amy gained a keen involvement in composing. Meeting Mike provided her with the opportunity to collaborate in composing a completely different style, and opened her eyes to the innovative world of contemporary acoustic music.
